Exactly but it is not always possible, it depends on the Hosting package. Some Host setups automatically create a nested subdomain folder. It looks very much like the op has set a redirect in the .htaccess of the Domain's default folder (to the '/site/ folder) which is messing up an attempt to install Joomla in another folder.
